What is the Green Mountain Challenge?

New for summer and fall 2023, this inn-to-inn tour is sure to test even the most seasoned hikers.

The Green Mountain Challenge is a 5-day, 75-mile inn-to-inn hiking tour of Vermont's rugged peaks, scenic villages and rolling woodlands. Starting from just outside Middlebury, this self-guided tour will take you from the rocky spine of the Green Mountains into the Mad River Valley, up Camel's Hump and through downtown Waterbury, culminating with two nights in picturesque Stowe and a summit of Mt. Mansfield, Vermont's highest peak. Picture backpacking but with delicious food, a comfortable bed and cold drinks at the end of the day.

We don't use the word "challenge" lightly: daily distances will range from approximately 7 to 18 miles, and your total ascent will exceed 20,000 feet. Prior hiking experience and good physical health are required. If you're not sure, give us a call.

Why offer this tour? Put simply, this kind of adventure is the reason we started Country Mile Vermont in the first place. The ancient art of traveling on foot and navigating from town to town provides a unique satisfaction uncommonly found in our busy, day-to-day lives. Tall mountains, great food, secluded paths, swimming holes and country charm are some of the things that make Vermont wonderful, and you can experience all of them on one epic tour.

Limited availability. Sunday arrival/Saturday departure only. Please contact us for details.
