INN-TO-INN HIKING TOURS

How It Works

"Like backpacking but with good food, warm beds and small packs."

Long popular in Europe and the UK, a self-guided inn-to-inn tour is perfect for travelers who want a taste of adventure (but not too much!) and enjoy finding hidden gems off the beaten path.

We offer 4, 6 or 8 night itineraries, with two nights at each carefully selected bed & breakfast. Your tour will alternate between "Adventure Days," where you'll have the chance to summit a high alpine peak, go on a local farm tour or visit a favorite swimming hole, and "Travel Days," where you'll hike a scenic route to your next inn.

You might walk directly from one inn to the next or, depending on how far you'd like to hike, we'll provide a short shuttle to your starting trailhead. Most people prefer an average of 8 to 9 miles per day, but we can accommodate much longer or shorter distances depending on your goals and abilities.

Sample Itinerary

Below you will find a sample itinerary based on a hypothetical 8-night tour. These examples represent only a fraction of the adventures and activities availableRoutes and Adventure Day activities are subject to change based on seasonal conditions and availability.

Saturday: Arrival

  • Arrive at the Green Mountain Inn in the charming village of Stowe, Vermont. Enjoy a short warm-up hike to Sunset Rock for a picturesque view of Main Street before settling in to dinner at the inn's in-house restaurant.

Sunday: Adventure Day

  • Breakfast at the inn, then prepare for a summit of Mt. Mansfield, Vermont's highest peak! If you'd like a shortcut, you can take advantage of Stowe's famous Gondola SkyRide to carry you most of the way up the mountain.

  • On your way back to the inn, check out the towering cascade of Bingham Falls.

  • Choose from one of several highly-rated restaurants a stone's throw from the inn, and discover for yourself why Vermont takes local food so seriously.

Monday: Travel Day

  • Breakfast at the inn, then let us load up your luggage as you prepare for your first Travel Day. Tonight's destination is the historic Old Stagecoach Inn in Waterbury, Vermont. Don't forget to grab your trail lunch before you head out (it would be a shame to miss out on the local cheese, fruit, chocolate and more!).

  • Following your route along the hillsides high above Stowe, you'll make your way down to Waterbury Village on a combination of pathways and country roads. Expect sweeping vistas of Vermont's highest peaks from across the valley. Your total distance today is approximately 8 to 10 miles. Please note that your route can always be shortened or lengthened to suit your abilities and goals.

  • After you've had a chance to shower and settle in, walk down the block to Hen of the Woodone of Vermont's most celebrated restaurants.

Tuesday: Adventure Day

  • Breakfast at the inn, then tour the headquarters of Vermont's most famous export: Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream! Once back at the inn, enjoy walking a short loop through historic downtown and the peaceful riverfront before going to dinner.

  • The more adventurous among your group may choose to instead summit the iconic Camel's Hump today. While it's possible to split your group on Adventure Days, we ask that no one hike alone.

Wednesday: Travel Day

  • After a short shuttle to the starting trailhead, hike through the remote and forested hills of Duxbury and Fayston on a combination of little-known trails and country roads, enjoying the views from what was once a Vermont “hill farm” on your way into Waitsfield and the Mad River Valley.

  • After arriving at the warm and inviting Yellow Farmhouse Inn, make the short walk to Waitsfield’s weekly Round Up on the River for several local food options and live music on the riverfront.

Thursday: Adventure Day

  • Today's options include a locals' favorite summit featuring fun "scrambles" over exposed granite boulders, and a tour of the amazing Knoll Farm.

Friday: Travel Day

  • Leaving the front door of the inn, pass through the historic village of Waitsfield  before following a trail into the forested hills south of town. You'll hike through an active “sugarbush” on your way to Warren and Chalet Mont Vert, a beautifully restored 19th-century farmhouse.

  • You may choose to have dinner at one of the restaurants en route to the inn, or let us provide a short shuttle into Warren Village for more options.

Saturday: Adventure Day

  • For your last Adventure Day, climb the alpine summit of Mt. Abraham before riding the chairlift down the other side of the mountain and giving your legs a deserved break. You may also choose to visit one of Vermont's most famous swimming holes to cool off!

Sunday: Departure

  • Breakfast at the inn, then departure.
